"All living things are intimately connected to humans...
"In my art, I believe that I can connect with the viewer using strong spiritual and traditional icons, colors, symbols, gender, the Great Plains, the cosmos, and, importantly, the sentience of animals.
"For me, humans, lands, creatures, the heavens, and traditional dwellings all share social spaces that are integrated and familiar. I believe there is a strong innate desire for us to return to these relationships because they are dynamic and complementary." BLACKPINTOHORSE

Ledger Art is part of a long tradition of Native people documenting their history on their own terms. Many Plains Native communities started chronicling events pictorially on materials like rocks and buffalo hides. Beginning in the mid-19th century, they used pages of ledger books obtained from settlers, hence the contemporary name. A revival of ledger art began in the 1960s using archived historical documents such as this soldier's record of service deposits dated 1918.
Ledger Art is very rare and remains an impactful statement in art history around the world.
